Congratulations to Shelby Daniel, Student of the Quarter

Shelby Daniel was named the First Quarter Student of the Quarter for the 2015-16 school year.  Currently a senior, Shelby enrolled with SOVGA in September of 2014.  Shelby struggled in the brick and mortar environment and let friends become the distractions that prevented her from not attending classes or doing her school work.  She found those to be the same distractions in the virtual environment last year and only completed two classes last year as a junior.

At the start of our current year, Shelby asked to come back as a senior.  Our initial reaction was why, what was going to change?  What changed was her attitude about school and being able to get done what she needs to get done to be able to graduate.  In the first quarter of this year, Shelby has already successfully completed three classes and is quickly closing in on a fourth class.

She states, “To be successful with online school is to be focused.  Don’t’ just look up answers, ask questions as often as you need to, and don’t put anything off or you will fall behind pretty quickly.  It’s easier to get work done when you don’t socialize a lot and come to school specifically to get your work done.”

In her spare time, Shelby enjoys hula hooping where she dances and uses different parts of her body to complete challenging tricks.  She also enjoys spending time with her friends and her animals.

Online learning is not for everyone.  However, Shelby has demonstrated the necessary attributes for an online student:  self-motivation, self-determination, and self-advocacy.

Congratulations, Shelby!
